How do you know if your business has special waste? Well, you can
always call and ask us! Simply put, this type of waste is material
that requires special handling to properly dispose of it at Metro
Waste Authority's Metro
Park East Landfill. MWA has trained professionals ready to assist
your business with the management and disposal of special waste,
including completing the necessary forms and ensuring regulatory
compliance.
Businesses and residents may dispose of special waste only after
they receive the appropriate approval. This is to ensure that your
waste is disposed of safely and to safeguard the well being of our
employees. Failure to obtain the necessary approval and permit
may result in rejection of a load.
Special waste falls into one of these three categories:
Commercial/Industrial Waste
This is non-hazardous industrial process waste, treated infectious
waste and similar potentially harmful waste that requires special
handling. Examples include:
- Processed sludge
- Ash
- Filters
- Sandblast media
- Dusty wastes
Commercial/industrial waste must not contain "free" liquids
and must be containerized if it can become airborne.
Petroleum Contaminated Soils
These soils are non-hazardous and contaminated with petroleum
products. This type of waste is treated by aeration and then used
as a daily cover at the Metro Park East Landfill.
Other Special Waste
These need special handling, such as spill cleanup materials,
off-spec products, animal carcasses, drums and pressurized containers,
fluorescent lights and asbestos.
When special waste needs disposal, most companies contract with
a hauler to remove the waste. MWA recommends that you, as
the generator, specify in your contract with the hauler to have
the materials taken to MWA's MPE Landfill. Why?
- First of all, because state law requires that waste generated
in this area goes to the MPE Landfill. Having this specified in
your contract is an added protection and assurance for you.
- Secondly, but just as important, as one of the top landfills
in North America*, the MPE Landfill goes above and beyond to meet
and exceed all local, state and national regulations. You can
be sure that your waste will be properly and safely disposed-and
that your liability is minimal.
