The Metro Park East Landfill has trained professionals ready to assist your business with the management and disposal of special waste. Part of this includes completing the necessary forms and ensuring regulatory compliance. Special waste may only be disposed after appropriate approval is received. This is to ensure that your waste is disposed of safely and to safeguard the well being of our employees. Failure to obtain the necessary approval and permit may result in rejection of a load.
To apply for a permit to dispose of Special Waste, contact the Special Waste Coordinator at 515-333-4475 or complete and submit the MWA Waste Profile Form.
Special waste falls into one of these five categories:
1: Commercial/Industrial Waste
This is non-hazardous industrial process waste, treated infectious waste and similar potentially harmful waste that requires special handling. Examples include processed sludge, ash, filters, sandblast media and dusty wastes. Commercial and industrial waste must not contain "free" liquids and must be containerized if it can become airborne.
2: Petroleum Contaminated Soils
These soils are non-hazardous and contaminated with petroleum products. This type of waste is treated by aeration and then used as a daily cover at the Metro Park East Landfill.
3: Asbestos
Both friable and non-friable asbestos containing materials can be disposed at Metro Park East Landfill. Friable asbestos consists of materials with "loose" asbestos fibers that become airborne easily presenting a risk to those exposed. Non-friable asbestos consists of materials where the asbestos fibers are "bound-up" in the material and are not as readily airborne (such as floor tile). Although non-friable asbestos is not thought to pose as great of risk to those exposed to it as friable asbestos, it still presents risk when the fibers are disrupted through crushing or demolition processes that occur during landfilling. For this reason, MWA manages the disposal of friable and non-friable asbestos the same way.

4: Non-RCRA Liquids and Semi-Solid Waste
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has permitted Metro Park East Landfill to accept non-Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) liquids and semi-solid waste to mix with a bulking material for proper disposal in the landfill. Examples include industrial liquids, cooling fluids, cutting oils, rinse water, latex paints and inks, food production waste, municipal waste, tank bottoms/sludges, and drilling waste.

5: Other Special Waste
These need special handling, such as spill cleanup materials, off-spec products, animal carcasses, drums and pressurized containers, and fluorescent lights.
