Garbage

Residential Garbage Hauler: Waste Management of Iowa

Automated Garbage Collection: West Des Moines has automated garbage collection. Containers are available in 32-, 64-, and 96-gallon sizes. New residents will inherit the container selected by previous occupants; they may exchange their container for another size at no cost, within two weeks of becoming a resident. After that period of time there is a $25 charge for changing container size.  Residents moving into newly-built homes should call West Des Moines Water Works at (515) 222-3460 to order a container at no charge.

  • Place your container at least 18 inches from the curb with the metal bars facing the street.
  • Containers must be at least 6 feet from permanent structures (including mailboxes, walls, lampposts, vehicles, and utility poles).
  • Avoid placing the container near low-hanging tree branches and be sure it's on a level surface.
  • Place your Curb It! bin, additional trash items, and yard waste bags at least three to six feet away from your container.

Set Out Day: Monday through Friday - call Waste Management of Iowa if you are unsure of your collection day
Set Out Time: Collection materials cannot be placed out before 5:00 p.m. the day before your scheduled collection day. Materials must be placed out before 6:00 a.m. the day of collection. Collection receptacles and non-collected items must be removed from the city right-of-way within 24 hours after collection.
Special Pickup: Special pickup services are available for physically disabled residents. Call Waste Management of Iowa for more information.
Appliances: Appliances placed at the curb must have additional stickers. Call Waste Management of Iowa to schedule an appliance pick-up, find out which appliances are included, applicable fees, and where stickers can be purchased.
Annual Cleanup Event: Annual cleanup event is held once each year. Call Waste Management of Iowa for date and more information.


Curb It! Residential Recycling

Set Out Procedure: The new recycling program with the wheeled carts starts July 1.  The new recycling carts will be picked up every other week, based on the color of your cart lid. West Des Moines sets their carts out on black lid week.  View the calendar to see your collection schedule. On your regular garbage collection day of black lid collection week, place your Curb It! cart at the curb. View the cart placement guidelines to ensure easy collection.


Compost It! Yard Waste Recycling*

Set Out Day: Same as garbage day, April through November
Set Out Time: Same as garbage and recyclables
Set Out Procedure: Curbside; your yard waste bags must be at least three feet away from your garbage container.
Per Bag Rate: $1.55 ($7.75 for bundle of five)
Brush Bundle Rate: $1.10 sticker must be attached to each bundle. Brush bundles must be no more than 18 inches in diameter and no more than four (4) feet long. Bundles cannot weigh more than 40 pounds. Each bundle must have a Compost It! sticker attached.

*Premium Compost It!  West Des Moines participates in MWA's Compost It! Premium Yard Service Program. You can purchase a 96-gallon cart for a one time fee of $60 for picking the cart up or $80 for having the cart delivered. Contact West Des Moines Water Works at 515-222-3460 to order your cart. Once you have ordered your cart you must purchase a $100 annual sitcker. Stickers can be purchased at City Hall.
