Garbage
Residential Garbage Collector: Des Moines Solid Waste

Automated Garbage Collection: Des Moines has automated garbage collection. Containers are available in 64- and 96-gallon sizes. New residents will inherit the container selected by previous occupants. Residents moving into newly built homes should call Public Works to order a container.
- Place your container at least 18 inches from the curb with the metal bars facing the street.
- Containers must be at least 6 feet from permanent structures (including mailboxes, walls, lampposts, vehicles, and utility poles).
- Avoid placing the container near low-hanging tree branches and be sure it's on a level surface.
- Place your Curb It! bin, additional trash items, and yard waste bags at least three to six feet away from your container.

Set Out Time: By 6:30 a.m.
Special Pickup: Special pickup services are available for elderly and physically disabled residents. Call Public Works' 24-hour customer service line at (515) 283-4950 for more information.
Extra Trash: A $1 extra-trash sticker must be attached to each 33-gallon bag or 2'x2'x3' box that is placed outside the collection container. Each bag or box placed outside the container cannot weigh more then 40 pounds.
Large Item Pickup Procedure: A $5 large-item sticker must be placed on each item that does not fit in the container, 33-gallon bag, or 2'x2'x3' box. These include such items as a table, couch, loveseat, kitchen chairs (4 maximum), 5 rolls of carpet tied in 4'x18" diameter bundles, barbeque grill (no propane tank), mattress, box spring, or bicycle. Stickers are available at Dahl's, Hy-Vee and City Hall. Stickers purchased outside city of Des Moines limits will not be accepted.
Appliances: Appliance pickup is by appointment. Each appliance must have seven of the $5 City of Des Moines large item stickers attached. Stickers must be purchased at Dahl's and Hy-Vee locations within Des Moines city limits. Stickers purchased outside city of Des Moines limits will not be accepted. Stickers are also available at City Hall.

Curb It! Residential Recycling
Curb It! Hauler: Des Moines Public Works

Set Out Procedure: On your regular garbage pickup day, place your blue recycling cart at the curb. View the cart placement guidelines to ensure easy collection. Carts will now be picked up every other week. Please refer to the calendar on your lid for your collection schedule.
Compost It! Yard Waste Recycling*

Set Out Time: Same as garbage and recyclables
Set Out Procedure: Curbside
Per Bag Rate: $1.55 ($7.75 for bundle of five)
Brush Bundle Rate: $1.10 sticker must be attached. Brush bundles must be no more than 18 inches in diameter and no more than four (4) feet long. Bundles cannot weigh more than 40 pounds. Each bundle must have a Compost It! sticker attached.

The City of Des Moines is now offering this program with convenient monthly billing for yard waste carts.
$10.42 per month, per cart for each 96 gallon cart.
$8.34 per month, per cart for each 64 gallon cart.
These fees, like your solid waste fee, will now be included on your Water Works bill.
Important Reminders:
- Participation in this service requires a minimum 12-month commitment. Carts turned in prior to 12 monthly billings will be charged a $50 early retrieval fee.
- Yard waste Carts are property of the City of Des Moines. Residents are responsible for the replacement costs of lost or stolen carts.
- If you are enrolled in this program and move to anotehr residence, please notify the Public Works 24-hour Customer Service Center at 283-4950.
- Yard debris is collected all year long without interruption to service.
