The City of West Des Moines will enter into a new long-term solid waste collection agreement, administered by Metro Waste Authority for the City, beginning November 29, 2010.
As a resident, you will receive a new cart in the Fall at no cost to you.
For the collection of solid waste, the City of West Des Moines currently offers three different cart sizes: 32 gallon, 64 gallon and 96 gallon. To determine
the size of your current cart, please refer to your West Des Moines Municipal Services Bill.
- If you currently use a 32-gallon cart, it will automatically be upsized to 48
gallons unless you complete the form below.
- If you currently use a 64-gallon cart, it will automatically be upsized to 96-
gallons unless you complete the form below.
- If you currently use a 96-gallon cart and wish to downsize to 48 gallons, please
use the form below.
Please Note: If you currently have two garbage carts and wish to change the sizing of each, please call Metro Waste Authority at 244-0021 to submit your request.
Sample carts will be on display at the West Des Moines City Hall, library and Metro Waste Authority to review.

Carts ordered will be delivered for a two week period beginning November 30th. Any orders for a different size cart placed after November 20th will not be included in the initial delivery phase. You will receive a default size cart, with the proper size delivered within the month of December.
MWA recognizes that not everyone produces the same amount of garbage. Here are a few reasons why a 48-gallon cart may be an option for you:
- You are the only person in your household and have low to minimum consumption.
- Currently, you do not fill your garbage container on a weekly basis.
- Rolling a large garbage cart to the curb is difficult due to its size.

I would like to sign up for the 48-gallon container size, Width: 23", Length: 28", and Height: 37". I understand that by selecting this option that I will not be receiving the standard 96-gallon container.
96-gallon
I would like to sign up for the 96-gallon container size, Width: 29", Length: 35", and Height: 43".
You will have 30 days from November 29, 2010, to exchange the cart if the size does not meet your needs. If your request is made after this 30 day grace period , a Cart Exchange Delivery Fee will be charged.
