Established in 1969, MWA was designated to manage the landfill for the Polk County area after state law required all Iowa communities to properly dispose of their solid waste in a sanitary landfill. Now, MWA operates many facilities and programs recognized for excellence at the state and national

Ten miles east of the State Fairgrounds, MPE Landfill is a highly sophisticated, tightly regulated operation receiving approximately 18 percent of the state's waste annually.
Metro Park West Landfill, formerly known as the North Dallas Sanitary Landfill, is located approximately five miles west-northwest of Perry, Iowa.
Waste collected at the RCC is consolidated and stored short-term until it is properly disposed of at a licensed hazardous waste facility or recycling center.
The MCC accepts yard waste from MWA's contracted haulers only and is NOT open to the public. Bulk or Compost It! bagged yard waste goes to the MPE Landfill.
Open to pre-approved customers only, the MTS consolidates and transports 75 percent of all residential solid waste collected within the Polk County area.
