Where Does It Go?

The Metro Compost Center (MCC) accepts yard waste only from MWA's contracted haulers and is NOT open to the public for yard waste disposal. Residents or other customers can take bulk or Compost It! bagged yard waste to the Metro Park East Landfill for disposal.

MWA has been working to turn residential yard waste into a useable product for many years. Yard waste makes up nearly 3 percent of what is thrown away. In 1989, the Iowa Legislature mandated that yard waste could no longer be buried in Iowa landfills. Annually, MWA processes more than 20,000 tons of yard waste into compost, a rich material added to soil to improve moisture retention and increase its organic level.
