Attention do-it-yourselfers! Regional Collection Center needs help in getting used oil Posted: 1/29/2010

If you are your own mechanic and you have used motor oil, bring it to Bondurant!  Metro Waste Authority’s Regional Collection Center (RCC) uses the oil in a Polk County-approved burner to heat its warehouse, where materials are received and sorted for proper disposal.

“We can only burn the used motor oil we receive from residents,” Judi Mendenhall, RCC facility manager said.  “Residents bringing used motor oil should not mix it with any solvents, water or other materials.  They can also bring containers of used oil that are larger than five gallons for a $10 handling fee per large container and must make an appointment.”

Hazardous materials – like oil, yard chemicals, and cleaners – should not be thrown in the garbage, down the drain, or allowed to run down driveways or parking lots into storm drains.  The RCC program was established to help protect Iowa’s groundwater.

Metro Waste Authority’s RCC has been open since 1994 and currently serves a 20-county area including Polk County.  Residents bringing less than 75 pounds of material are not charged a fee (more than 75 pounds and the resident is charged $1 per pound).  Also, latex paint (a non-hazardous material) is charged at $1 per gallon.  The RCC does charge a fee to businesses, schools or government agencies.

The RCC is open to the public from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and the first and third Saturdays of the month from 8 a.m. to noon.  For more information, call 515-967-5512.
