Constructed Wetlands Leachate Treatment Facility - Fact Sheet

Leachate is created when rainwater seeps through waste in a landfill and picks up pollutants such as nitrogen, iron, and ammonia. Metro Waste Authority’s (MWA) Constructed Wetlands Treatment Facility, which was built in 2000, is the first of its kind in Iowa and one of the first in the nation. MWA won the 2000 Governor's Iowa Environmental Excellence Award for Special Recognition in Water Quality for the constructed wetlands.

Metro Methane Recovery Facility - Fact Sheet

In 1994, Metro Waste Authority partnered with Waste Management of Iowa, Inc., and Mid American Energy to build and operate the Metro Methane Recovery Facility. By establishing the facility, MWA and its partners are able to produce a renewable energy source that is both produced and consumed locally.

Metro Park East Landfill - Fact Sheet

Metro Waste Authority’s Metro Park East (MPE) Landfill is the largest public landfill in Iowa, managing 18 percent of the state’s waste annually. The MPE Landfill accepts municipal and commercial solid waste, construction and demolition debris, as well as materials requiring special handling (special waste).

Metro Transfer Station - Fact Sheet

Metro Waste Authority’s Metro Transfer Station (MTS) was recognized in 2004 with the Gold Award for excellence by the Solid Waste Association of North America. While the facility is not open to the public, it is primarily used by MWA’s contracted haulers for disposal of residential waste. At the site, MWA consolidates the trash and hauls it to its Metro Park East Landfill.

Metro Waste Authority (MWA) is an independent regional government agency comprised of 16 member communities, one county and six planning members. It owns and operates the largest public landfill in Iowa, and the income it generates from landfill services pays for recycling and waste reduction programs available to businesses and residents in Central Iowa. The agency was formed in 1969.

Regional Collection Center for Household Hazardous Waste - Fact Sheet

Metro Waste Authority Regional Collection Center (RCC), located in Bondurant, Iowa, opened in December 1994 and was the first permanent household hazardous waste (HHW) facility in Iowa.

The RCC serves approximately 380,000 Polk County residents as well as an expansion area that includes 19 outlying counties surrounding Polk County.  Altogether the RCC provides service to over 830,000 residents.
