Yard Waste Overview

Yard waste was banned from Iowa landfills by the State Legislature in 1989.  This means you can't throw your grass clippings, leaves, and other yard debris in with your regular trash.

MWA implemented Compost It! ®, a simplified, metro-wide yard waste recycling program, in spring 2001. Compost It! is now available in 12 communities:

If your community is not included in this list, talk with your City Council and let them know you want Compost It!.

Details on Compost It! for your participating community, and yard waste removal information for non-participating areas, are available by selecting your location from the drop-down list above.
