Most communities in Central Iowa offer the Compost It! program to help residents conveniently dispose of yard and garden waste from the curb. Yard Waste is picked up weekly during Compost It! season.
NOTE: Residents who live in communities that do no offer Compost It!, such as Ankeny, should call their garbage hauler for collection options. Yard waste collection is offered year-round in the City of Des Moines.
Two Collection Options
Residents can use the Compost It! program one of two ways - or use both!

Recycling Yard Waste into Compost
Grass clippings/garden debris are not accepted as garbage at most Iowa landfills, including Metro Park East Landfill, so these materials do not belong in your garbage cart.
Grass clippings/garden debris are accepted for composting at Metro Park East Landfill and also by using the Compost It! program. Your lawn & garden debris helps create compost, a natural soil conditioner.
