Environmental Stewardship Scholarship

Metro Waste Authority has two Environmental Stewardship Scholarships available to high school seniors and college students who plan pursue an environmental field. The scholarship is offered to students who reside in our service area and will attend an Iowa school. Download the application here.

    Two $1,000 scholarships are available to high school seniors and college students

  • Who is eligible?
    • Applicant must reside (permanent address) in Metro Waste Authority's service area (Alleman, Altoona, Ankeny, Bondurant, Carlisle, Clive, Dawson, Des Moines, Elkhart, Grimes, Hartford, Jefferson, Johnston, Linden, Minburn, Mingo, Mitchellville, Norwalk, Perry, Pleasant Hill, Polk City, Polk County (Unincorporated), Prairie City, Redfield, Runnells, Sheldahl, Urbandale, Waukee, West Des Moines, Windsor Heights).
    • Applicants must be pursuing an environmental field.
    • Applicants must attend a college, university or vocational school in Iowa.
    • Applicants must be classified as a full-time student in their freshman (this includes high school graduates who are accepted at an accredited college or university), sophomore or junior year at an accredited college or university during their time of application process, AND at the time funds are disbursed. 
  • How do I apply?

    Complete the application form and provide an official transcript of grades. An “official” transcript will have a raised seal, the registrar’s signature or is submitted by a Transcript Services Company.

    Recipients will be notified April 7, via email. A scholarship becomes confirmed upon proof of enrollment in college by the prospective recipient. 

  • Will the award cover all costs?

    Maximum value of each full award is $1,000, payable in a lump sum payment. Scholarship funds may be used to pay all normal college expenses including tuition, room and board, book purchases, and rentals. Refundable fees will not be paid.

  • How will the scholarship be awarded?

    Scholarship awards will be sent directly to the college to be credited to your account.

  • Am I eligible to accept other scholarships?

    Other scholarship opportunities may be available to you and you are free to accept any of these. Specifically, this rule requires notification to MWA of other scholarship awards providing tuition-free assistance.
