Educational Programs

Metro Waste Authority (MWA) has partnered with Des Moines Water Works, Wastewater Reclamation Authority, the City of Des Moines Stormwater Utility, along with associate members- the cities of Norwalk and Johnston to form the Urban Environmental Partnership (UEP). The organizations share concerns about protecting water quality in the Central Iowa area. One of the main goals of the UEP is to educate students about what they can do to help.

The partnership has developed separate curricula for students in grades K-8 in the Polk County area. MWA's Education Specialist Mary Gillaspey is working with the other utilities in bringing these programs into the classroom.

The UEP has 16 programs available for grades K-8. Many of the programs are specific to the services MWA provides, including helping communities recycle, operating the Metro Park East Landfill, learning the in's and out's of the Curb It! recycling program and providing safe disposal of Household Hazardous Waste at the Regional Collection Center.

For more information on any of these programs, or to schedule a classroom presentation, contact Mary Gillaspey, MWA education specialist, at 323-6505.
