Yard Waste - Yard waste was banned from Iowa landfills by the State Legislature in 1989. This means grass clippings, leaves, and other yard debris cannot be thrown in the garbage. Residents of Altoona, Bondurant, Carlisle, Clive, Des Moines, Grimes, Johnston, Norwalk, Pleasant Hill, Urbandale, West Des Moines and Windsor Heights can use the Compost It! program to dispose of their yard waste. Residents of Central Iowa can also take their yard waste to the MPE Landfill.
