Metro Waste Authority is seeking a full-time (Hours of operation for the summer would be Tuesday -Friday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, 1st and 3rd Saturday 8:00 am - Noon, 2nd Saturday 6:30 am -1:30 pm) environmental technician laborer.  The applicant will receive and inspect hazardous waste from households and Very Small Quantity Generators (VSQG’s), segregate waste in to proper DOT classes for recycling or disposal, prepare wastes for shipment, maintain facility and grounds, bale cardboard, and provide information to the public regarding the proper disposal of hazardous waste. Successful candidate must be self-motivated and team oriented. Reliability and punctuality are mandatory.

Primary activities will be conducted at the Metro Hazardous Waste Drop-Off facility of Metro Waste Authority.

Intern position requires:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Some job related experience in handling and processing of hazardous waste products is preferred but not required.  
  • Valid driver’s license.

ESSSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  1. Communicates effectively using written, verbal, and electronic media to educate customers and coworkers on proper procedures.  Provides prompt and courteous service to customers both internal and external at all times.
  2. Follows established procedures for the safe handling, identification, and segregation of materials throughout the receiving process. Recognizes unknown hazardous waste materials and notifies supervisor of their existence.
  3. Takes responsibility for cleanliness of warehouses and grounds.  Maintains landscape and grounds as directed.
  4. Bales recyclables and prepares for shipment.
  5. Processes material for disposal or reutilization as directed by staff.
  6. Inspects and maintains facility and equipment daily.  Makes on-the-spot correction when possible.  Performs special inspections as directed.  Reports unresolved deficiencies to the facility manager.
  7. Follows established safety procedures. Corrects unsafe acts or conditions when safe to do so and reports unresolved issues to the facility manager.  Requests reorder of supplies before they become exhausted.
