Internship: Recycling and Environmental Tech

Location: Metro Hazardous Waste Drop-Off - Grimes

Type of Employment: Part Time

Bale and prepare recyclables for shipment. Receive and inspect hazardous waste from households and Very Small Quantity Generators (VSQG’s).  Segregate waste in to proper DOT classes for recycling or disposal. Prepare wastes for shipment. Maintain and improve facility operations and equipment. Provide information to the public regarding the proper disposal of hazardous waste. Comply with all safety requirements. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

1.Communicates effectively using written, verbal, and electronic media to educate customers and coworkers on proper procedures.  Provides prompt and courteous service to customers both internal and external at all times.

2.Identifies recyclables.  Segregates, bales and prepares recyclables for shipment.

3.Assists residents with purchasing of compost.

4.Follows established procedures for the safe handling, identification, and segregation of materials throughout the receiving process. Recognizes unknown hazardous waste materials and notifies supervisor of their existence.

5.Takes responsibility for cleanliness of buildings and grounds.  Maintains landscape and grounds as directed.

6.Processes material for disposal or reutilization in accordance with 40 CFR.  Complies with the requirements of 40 and 49 CFR relating to packaging, marking, labeling, and records keeping for hazardous materials.

7.Maintains equipment as needed.

8.Follows established safety procedures and suggests improvements when possible.  Corrects unsafe acts or conditions when safe to do so and reports unresolved issues to the facility manager.  Requests reorder of supplies before they become exhausted.

  1. Understands the EMS policy and what it means to MWA.  Understands how the position and job responsibilities impact the environment and what you can be done to improve them.  Recommends improvements through the Suggestion Box or to the EMS Core Team or the MWA Management Team in cases where has no managerial approval is required to make improvements.
  2. Demonstrates organizational values: leadership, integrity, positivity, teamwork and innovation.
  3. Performs other special projects, duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday | 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

This position pays $15 per hour.
