Roof Shingles

Roofing companies and residents can save money and keep asphalt shingles out of the landfill by recycling them at both of our landfills, Metro Park East and Metro Park West

This rates are effective May 30, 2018

Location Recycling Rate* Garbage Rate
Metro Park East $20 (inside service area) $25 (outside service area) $38
Metro Park West $23 $38

*Shingles that are recycled must meet our acceptable guidelines. Acceptable shingle loads can include nails, felt paper, and tar paper. They cannot include wood, wood pallets, woodshake shingles, any metal, plastic, or vinyl, mastic or plastic roofing cement, rolled roofing materials, nail coils, or other garbage, trash or dirt.

Complete the Forms

To assist your drivers, fill out the appropriate forms ahead of time. These are required for every load of recycled shingles by the Iowa DOT to verify the where the shingles originated.

  • Residential: The Residential Form requires company name, address, phone and contact name, along with residential address of project. Download the form in English or Spanish.
  • Commercial: Four-plex and above projects are considered commercial and must have asbestos testing completed prior to recycling it. Testing is simple and can be completed by a local company. We suggest completing testing before you tear off the roof. Once the results are received, complete the commercial permit, then email or fax the documents to or 515.967.7965, respectively, before bringing your shingles to the landfill.

Communicate with Scalehouse

When you arrive, communicate to the scale house staff that you have shingles to recycle. They will:

Checking the Load

Our staff member determines if the shingles are clean and communicates to the scale if your load qualifies. If your load doesn’t qualify, you still have the opportunity to sort through the load, remove the trash and receive the discount. Some loads are impossible to clean and our staff will ask you to take what’s still on your truck to the Trash Drop-Off Area to unload.
