Understanding the Analytics

When reviewing the results above, key aspects are explained below:

  • Stability - Most uses of compost require a stable to very stable product that prevents nutrient tie up and maintains or enhances oxygen availability.
  • pH level - pH is the measure of acidity (alkalinity) or hydrogen ion activity of compost. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, with a pH of 7 indicating neutrality. A pH change of 1 unit means a 10-fold increase or decrease of acidity. Ideally, the compost should have a pH between 6 and 8.
  • Cucumber Test - Cucumber seeds are salt tolerant and very sensitive to ammonia and organic acid toxicity. By germinating cucumber seeds in high concentration in the compost, it measures toxic effects. Values above 80 percent are indicative of well-cured compost.
