Commitment to Safe, Smart Waste Disposal & Recycling

The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) named Metro Waste Authority (MWA) the winner of the SWANA Silver Excellence Award in Landfill Management. The award was presented at SWANA’s 2015 WASTCON conference held in August. Metro Waste Authority received the award for landfill management of Metro Park East Landfill, which has served Central Iowa since 1972.

Increasing Efficiencies & Recycling

“As the largest landfill in the state, Metro Park East continues to improve design, construction and daily operations to meet the highest standards of excellence,” says Reo Menning, executive director at Metro Waste Authority. “By expanding recycling options for residents and businesses, and increasing efficiencies at the landfill, we best serve our communities by ensuring safe, smart waste disposal and recycling options.”

Key factors for winning this award include:

  • Introducing a compaction method which extends the landfill’s lifespan an extra five to 11 years, which saves the agency an estimated$11 million long-term.
  • Creating new programs and services to meet the needs of businesses and residents.
  • Balancing cost and value to ensure MWA stays compliant, protects the environment and remains fiscally sound.

SWANA’s Excellence Awards Program recognizes outstanding solid waste programs and facilities that advance the practice of environmentally and economically sound solid waste management through their commitment to innovation, health and safety, and successful public education and outreach programs. Winners also demonstrate they are fiscally and environmentally responsible through their compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations.
