Secure Your Loads For Safer Roads

posted 4/1/2015

Spring has arrived, and this means your spring cleaning and summer projects are not far behind. Although garbage, yard waste and recycling can usually be disposed of conveniently at the curb, you may find yourself with more than your cart will hold, or not wanting to wait until collection day. If that’s the case, you may be planning to haul it to the landfill.  Before you do, make sure you know and follow our secured load policy.

What is the Secured Loads Policy?

All waste and recyclables received at Metro Waste Authority facilities must arrive fully secured. This means loads should be enclosed and/or covered, so loose materials cannot fall or be blown from the vehicle. Vehicles and trailers are subject to inspection by authorized employees to determine if a load is adequately secured. Any vehicle or trailer arriving with an unsecured load will be charged an additional fee.

How Do I Secure my Load?

If the load is not fully enclosed within the vehicle or trailer, then other methods must be used to secure it. Tarping the vehicle is the preferred method, especially for yard and garden waste, however, rope, cord, twine, bungee cords, or tie downs are acceptable alternatives for loads consisting of large, bulky items (railroad ties, appliances, sofas, etc.) View detailed secured load information.

Why is it Important to Secure my Load?

Properly secured loads traveling to the landfill prevent litter from being strewed along our roadways. More importantly, unsecured loads pose a risk of serious injury from debris exiting the vehicle onto the roadway into oncoming traffic.

What if my Load is not Properly Secured?

Any vehicle arriving with an unsecured load will be charged a service fee in addition to the regular tipping fee. The amount of the fee is based on the size of the vehicle:

  • Small vehicles (less than 25,000 lbs.) in violation of the Secured Loads Policy are charged a service fee of $10. Habitual violators are charged a service fee of $100.
  • Large vehicles (more than 25,000 lbs.) in violation of the Secured Loads Policy are charged a service fee of $100.

Help us keep our roads safe and clean. Secure your load!
