Earth Month Plastic Bag Swap

Bring Some Bags and Get a Bag!

April is Earth Month. Metro Waste Authority is shining a light on the negative affect plastic bags have on our environment.

During the month of April, bring your used plastic grocery bags to city hall. When you bring in a bag of bags, you’ll get a reusable grocery tote courtesy of Metro Waste Authority (one tote per household)! This is a great opportunity to keep those plastic bags from turning into litter that pollute our prairies, waterways and pantries!

Metro Waste Authority focuses on plastic bags because as much as nine percent of what goes into our landfill is plastic film. Imagine if you stopped putting used grocery sacks in your trash. You would save space at your house and Metro Park East Landfill’s house!

So where do those plastic bags go if not to the landfill? To Plastic Recycling of Iowa Falls to be turned into a beautiful, all-weather park bench that your city could win! Recycling programs such as Iowa Falls or through local grocers are the only way to recycle plastic bags, they cannot be placed in your Curb It! cart.

Throughout the month, Metro Waste Authority will weigh the bags collected from each member community. At the end of April, the city with the most weight per capita will win a bench to be placed in their hometown!
