Recycling Cart Lid Latches

Windy days often cause recycling cart lids to blow open, and extra high winds can often blow carts over completely. Both scenarios leave paper, water bottles, milk jugs and other recyclables littering neighborhoods. So, what can you do to keep your recycling from blowing out of your cart on windy days?

Get A Recycling Cart Lid Latch!

Metro Waste Authority is launching a pilot program to equip recycling cart lids with the Toter DuraLatch™. The DuraLatch™ is a small device attached to the lid of the recycling cart to keep it closed if the cart should blow over. Through the use of gravity, the DuraLatch™ releases when the cart is tipped upside down to be emptied into the recycling truck during collection. See how the DuraLatch™ works.

Our pilot program is aimed at curbing litter from blowing recyclables and to help ensure materials get recycled instead of blown away. Residents who live in rural communities or flat areas that lack mature trees to block the wind are especially encouraged to sign up, however the lid latch is available for any Curb It! Recycling Program customers with a 96-gallon green cart. Non-Curb It! customers, including those with blue recycling carts or 14-gallon rectangular bins, are not eligible.
