See Where Recyclables are Sorted
Ever wonder what happens to all those recyclables once your green Curb It! cart is emptied? Take a tour and see for yourself!
Metro Waste Authority offers tours of the Curb It! recycling facility operated by Mid America Recycling. More than 28,000 tons of materials are recycled from more than 148,000 Des Moines Metro households each year at the facility.
What To Expect
Tours include a presentation about what makes something recyclable, why recycling is important and where our recyclables go after they are sorted. Participants then walk through the facility and see first-hand how mechanical processes, technology and people sort the recyclables so they can be sold for reuse.
Tours are approximately one hour and are free of charge.
2017 Tour Date (Register below)

What to Wear
We recommend wearing casual clothes, and closed-toed shoes are required. The facility has many large, open doors so it is best to dress weather appropriate.
As a safety precaution, tour attendees must be at least 14 years old.
