Many streams have not been named or, if they have, might not have a sign with the name to identify it. Naming a stream is one of the key steps in helping communities take ownership over it and work to protect it.

Stream with Names, but No Signs
If your stream has a name but no sign, contact us. We will help you get a sign(s) to identify the stream.

Streams without Names
Since many streams have not been named, your team might have the ability to name it. You will need to submit a proposal to the U.S. Board of Geographic Names (USBGN). Information on the process can be found here.

What name is best?
While there is no right answer to this question, here are some things to think about when proposing the name:

  • Is there natural or local history, folklore or historic incidence of significance linked to the stream?
  • What is the topography of the stream?
  • Is the name short and easy to pronounce and remember?
  • Is the name creative but reflect good taste?
