When the house hunt comes to an end and you’re about to make the move into your new home, we want to make sure you are equipped with all the recycling and disposal knowledge you’ll need to successfully settle in!
Setup Services
Although setting up services looks a little different depending on which city you live in, it’s easy to get the ball rolling. Head to our Collection & Drop-off page and select the city you live in to determine who to call. Typically, when you call to put water in your name, your curbside collection services are started as well.
From there, you can use the carts that were left at the home. If it is new construction, or there are no carts, give us a call at 515.244.0021 and we’ll help you out.
Learn Your Collection Day/Time
Once you’ve got your service set up and ready to go, you’ll want to learn your collection day. Click on your city to learn what day your curbside collection will occur. Trash and yard waste* are collected weekly (during yard waste season April – November), while recycling is collected bi-weekly depending on the color of your Curb It! cart lid.
Make sure your carts are out by 6 AM to ensure timely collection. Here’s more information about cart placement.
Get Rid of Moving Boxes
Drop off your empty, broken-down moving boxes for FREE at one of our cardboard drop-offs! Here’s a full list. Keep in mind you don’t need to be a resident of the city to utilize the drop-off.
Remember, packing materials like Styrofoam, bubble wrap, and other plastic film are not recyclable and go in your normal trash. Opt for newspaper instead and recycle it all when you’re done!
Paint or Chemicals Left Behind
If you find yourself walking into a basement or garage full of old chemicals or paint, drop it off at one of our hazardous waste drop-offs in Grimes (by appointment only) or Bondurant. We take items like paint, lawn chemicals, household cleaners, electronics, and more!
Extra Trash
If you’re not sure everything will fit in your garbage cart for the first few collections, utilize our large or extra item stickers to get rid of extra trash or large items at the curb. They are available for purchase online or at these area retailers.
If you have other recycling or disposal questions as you go through your move, visit our recycling and disposal guide or give us a call at 515.244.0021.
