The Compost It! program picks up yard waste throughout the Metro. Curbside collection will end November 28th for the season. The program accepts small twigs and branches, leaves and lawn clippings, as well as any garden vegetation. Just avoid dirt, mulch, rocks, and food.
Tag it: Brush bundles and store-brand bags require a green Compost It! sticker for collection. Bundles can be no larger than four feet long by 18 inches in diameter.
Bag it: Put loose yard waste such as lawn clippings, leaves, and garden vegetation in Compost it! bags or store-brand bags with a green Compost It! sticker.
Wheel it: Throw everything in your Compost It! cart and take it to the curb before November 30th. If you’re wondering what all this cart business is about, see if it would be a good fit for you!
Retailers sell Compost It! bags and stickers throughout the Metro. For curbside collection, use Compost It! brand yard waste bags or stickers. When using store-brand bags a Compost It! sticker must be added for collection.
The following communities participate in the Compost It! program: Altoona, Bondurant, Carlisle, Clive, Des Moines, Grimes, Johnston, Norwalk, Pleasant Hill, Polk City, Urbandale, West Des Moines, and Windsor Heights.
If your trees just can’t shake their leaves by November 28th, there will be one more chance for curbside yard waste pick-up during winter collection, December 28, 2020 – January 8, 2021. During winter collection, live Christmas trees and yard waste will be collected.
Year-round yard waste disposal is also available at Metro Park East or Metro Park West Landfills.
