Garage Cleanout

If you’re working in your garage, think twice before putting things in your green Curb It! recycling cart.

Typically, items found in the garage should not be disposed of in the recycling. In fact, they often shouldn’t go into the regular garbage either.

During a recent audit of items being brought from the curbside to Metro Recycling Facility, an alarming number of things from the garage were included. Things like brakes and engine parts from cars, metal from gutters and siding, license plates, paints and other chemicals, as well as small appliances and tools were all found.

These items are problematic because they can’t be recycled through curbside collection. This may be due to the weight and type of metal they are made from as well as chemicals they may contain.

The Curb It! recycling program is meant for items from inside your household. Think of single-use products from your kitchen and bathroom that contain food you eat, or liquids used for cleaning. Heavy duty work and items produced in your garage don’t typically fall within the parameters of what can be accepted curbside.

Help keep workers safe and improve the quality of items coming to Metro Recycling Facility by skipping your recycling cart during your next garage cleanout.
