A key focus for Metro Waste Authority is environmental stewardship, and we are proud to support individuals who share that passion and exemplify a commitment to conservation and sustainability. This is why we established the Environmental Stewardship Scholarship program.
This year’s Environmental Stewardship Scholarship winners are listed below:

Andrew Bliss
Andrew Bliss is a 2022 Dowling Catholic High School graduate. This fall, Andrew will begin their freshman year at Iowa State University, majoring in environmental engineering. Andrew is passionate about climate change and environmental pollution and intends to pursue a career working on solutions to environmental problem-solving.

Bryce Byford
Bryce Byford is a 2022 Ankeny Centennial High School graduate. This fall, Bryce will begin their freshman year at Iowa State University majoring in environmental science. Bryce developed a passion for environmental stewardship during their time as a Cub Scout and that passion was further propelled during an advanced placement in environmental science course in high school. Bryce intends to pursue a career working to preserve natural resources.

Evan Dicker
Evan Dicker is a 2022 Roosevelt High School graduate. Evan is excited to pursue an education geared toward growing the knowledge and skillset that will contribute to protecting the environment by studying environmental science at Iowa State University. When school begins in the fall, Evan is excited to participate in environmentally motivated clubs and engage in community outreach to help us move toward a healthier earth!

Jessica Olander
Jessica Olander will be entering their senior year at Iowa State University, majoring in environmental science. Jessica has served as a member of the Student Government Sustainability Committee among other student organizations at Iowa State.

Kaitlyn Richards
Kaitlyn Richards is in their sophomore year at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln and is majoring in environmental studies, fisheries, and wildlife emphasis. Kaitlyn is an ambitious community steward and is currently involved in Sustain UNL and Change Maker student organizations.

Kate Bachmann
Kate Bachmann is a 2022 Johnston High School graduate. This fall, Kate will begin their freshman year at Drake University majoring in environmental science and sustainability and resilience. Kate developed their passion for environmental stewardship while taking an advanced placement environmental science course and put their passion to work by engaging in a program to bring recycling back to their high school. Kate intends to keep their momentum as an environmental steward and pursue a career in the sustainability field.

Kathryn Sweet
Kathryn Sweet is a 2022 Johnston High School graduate. This fall, Kathryn will begin their freshman year at the University of Arizona, majoring in environmental science. Kathryn is passionate about climate action and was involved with climate action groups throughout high school. Kathryn is excited to continue their involvement in environmental stewardship opportunities during their college career!
