Environmental protection is at the core of our agency and it drives our daily operations, as well as the programs and services we offer. For example, landfills are scientifically engineered to protect air quality and groundwater. However, at Metro Waste Authority, we go beyond meeting minimum environmental requirements to create smart, safe, and sustainable solutions. We practice what we preach and encourage others to dream big and do the same. This is why we have established the Environmental Stewardship Scholarship program, available to students who meet the following requirements:

  • Permanent resident of one of the following communities, located in our planning areas:
    • Ankeny, Bondurant, Carlisle, Clive, Dawson, Des Moines, Elkhart, Grimes, Hartford, Jefferson, Johnston, Linden, Minburn, Mingo, Mitchellville, Norwalk, Perry, Pleasant Hill, Polk City, Polk County, Prairie City, Redfield, Runnells, Sheldahl, Urbandale, Waukee, West Des Moines, Windsor Heights
  • Pursuing a career in an environmental field
  • Full-time enrollment in an accredited community college, college, or university

The application window for this annual scholarship is February 1 through May 1.
