battery drop off goal

We’re celebrating a big achievement! Residents have safely dropped off more than 10,000 pounds of batteries since the launch of our battery drop-off containers last April.

This milestone reflects how simple, convenient options can help keep hazardous materials out of the garbage and recycling streams.

Why Safe Battery Disposal Matters

Batteries and electronics should never go in your garbage or recycling cart. Many contain materials that are flammable or can leak harmful substances. When disposed of improperly, they cause fires and leak chemicals in collection trucks, landfills, and recycling facilities.

Safe disposal protects workers, prevents fires, and ensures valuable materials are recovered and repurposed.

Find a Drop-Off Location Near You

We began with 13 drop-off locations in places people already visit, including city halls, libraries, and community centers. The program has since expanded to more than 25 locations, making safe disposal more accessible than ever!

What Can You Drop Off?

You can bring the following to the battery drop-off containers:

  • Household batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9V, and button batteries)
  • Batteries from power tools
  • Rechargeable electronics like laptops, tablets, cell phones, and smartwatches

Simply bag each battery using the bags provided on the container and drop them into the labeled slot. It’s that easy!

What Happens After Drop-Off?

Collected batteries and electronics are sent to Metro Hazardous Waste Drop-Off in Bondurant. Certified staff inspect and sort the materials, and electronics may be refurbished or broken down into scrap metals and plastics, while batteries are sent to partners who recycle them into new materials, including new batteries!
