If you’ve been waiting to drop-off hazardous waste, we’re happy to let you know we will be reopening both of our hazardous waste facilities with normal hours on Tuesday, Aug. 18th. As a reminder, please stay inside your car when dropping off your hazardous waste. A mask is also recommended.
While it might be obvious to be careful with bleach, do you know what to do when you’re done with it?
Bring it to Metro Waste Authority!
You take precautions to put cleaners in high or locked cupboards away from kids, and everyone knows you shouldn’t pour motor oil down the drain.
Knowing what’s hazardous in your home is important. But when it comes time to get rid of things like bleach, antifreeze or bug spray, it’s important to know where it should go.
Hazardous waste can be brought to Metro Waste Authority drop-off sites located in Bondurant and Grimes. In addition, some communities who have Metro Waste Authority garbage and recycling can request houseside pick up of hazardous items. Please keep in mind if you're visiting one of our facilities you must stay in your car to drop-off hazardous waste. Masks are also recommended.
Common household items like bleach, rechargeable batteries, oil-based paints, lawn chemicals such as fertilizers or weed killer, old motor oil or gasoline, and energy efficient lightbulbs (CFL) are all accepted for free.
If you're in need of items such as stain, paint, fertilizer, and more, check out our Swap Shop at Metro Hazardous Waste Drop-Off. We've moved the swap shop outside to adhere to social distancing. A mask is also reccommended. The new swap shop hours are Tuesday - Friday from 9 AM - 4 PM.
There’s no reason to stock pile items that can be a hazard to your family. Check out the list of accepted items at www.WhereItShouldGo.com. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, give us a call at 515.244.0021 because that’s probably accepted too!
By knowing where it should go, you too can become a waste authority.
