moving guide

When the house hunt comes to an end and you’re about to make the move into your new home, we want to make sure you are equipped with all the recycling and disposal knowledge you’ll need to successfully settle in!

Set Up Services

Although setting up services looks a little different depending on which city you live in, it’s easy to get the ball rolling. Head to our Collection & Drop-off page and select the city you live in to determine who to call. Typically, when you call to put water in your name, your curbside collection services are started as well.

From there, you can use the carts that were left at the home. If it is a new construction, or there are no carts, give us a call at 515.244.0021 and we’ll help you out.

Learn Your Collection Day/Time

Once you’ve got your service set up and ready to go, you’ll want to learn your collection day. Click on your city to learn what day your curbside collection will occur. Garbage and yard waste* are collected weekly (*during yard waste season April – November), while recycling is collected bi-weekly depending on the color of your Curb It! cart lid.

Once you know your collection day, just remember to make sure your carts are out by 6 AM to ensure timely collection!

Get Rid of Moving Boxes

If you have more moving boxes than your recycling cart can hold, let us help! Drop off your empty, broken-down moving boxes for free at one of our many cardboard drop-offs located throughout the metro!

Remember, packing materials like Styrofoam, bubble wrap, and other plastic film are not recyclable and go in your normal garbage. Pro tip: Opt to pack with newspaper instead and recycle it all when you’re done!

Paint or Chemicals Left Behind

Find yourself walking into a basement or garage full of old chemicals or paint? These items aren't regular garbage, but it isn't tricky to ensure they are disposed of in a safe, smart way!

Drop them off at one of our hazardous waste drop-offs in Grimes (by appointment only) or Bondurant. Many household hazardous items, like oil-based paint, lawn chemicals, and household cleaners, are accepted for free!

Extra Garbage

If you’re not sure everything will fit in your garbage cart for the first few collections, utilize our large or extra item sticker program to get rid of extra garbage or large items at the curb.

If you have other recycling or disposal questions as you go through your move, visit our Recycling & Disposal Guide, or give us a call at 515.244.0021!
