Yard Waste

Most communities in Central Iowa offer the Compost It! program to help residents conveniently dispose of yard and garden waste from the curb. Yard Waste is picked up weekly during Compost It! season.

NOTE: Residents who live in communities that do not offer Compost It!, such as Ankeny, should call their garbage hauler for collection options.

Two Collection Options for Residents

Residents can use the Compost It! program one of two ways - or use both!

2020 Compost It! Season

Winter Collection  Dec. 28, 2020 - Jan. 8, 2021
Regular Season* April 6 to Nov. 28, 2020

*Yard waste is accepted at Metro Park East Landfill year-round. If it’s brought in Compost It! bags, or with appropriate stickers, it is free of charge year-round. Otherwise, there is a disposal fee.

Recycling Yard Waste into Compost

Yard waste is not accepted as garbage at most Iowa landfills, including Metro Park East Landfill, so these materials do not belong in your garbage cart.

Yard waste collected through the Compost It! program is taken to the Compost Center at Metro Park East Landfill. Residents and businesses can also deliver yard waste directly to the site. Lawn and garden debris creates compost, a natural soil conditioner.
