Grills are usually too large to fit in your garbage cart, but you can still dispose of one easily:

Charcoal & Propane Tank Disposal

Before disposing of a grill, be sure to remove any charcoal or propane tanks.

  • Charcoal: Once cooled, charcoal can be bagged and thrown in the garbage.
  • Propane Cylinders: One-pound propane cylinders can be taken to Metro Hazardous Waste Drop-Off in Bondurant or Metro Northwest Transfer Station in Grimes (by appointment only). Larger, 20-pound propane tanks are not accepted at our hazardous waste drop-off locations, but they can be taken to Ferrellgas in Des Moines. Many propane manufacturers also offer exchange programs, with more information available on their websites.
