  • Benefits

There are a number of scientifically-proven benefits associated with using compost. The primary benefits include:

Holds Moisture –  Compost increases soil’s ability to absorb water, meaning less watering is needed.

Adds Nutrients – Compost improves soil quality by providing nutrients, which creates a habitat for plants to thrive. This means compost can function in place of a chemical fertilizer.

Reduces Erosion – Compost adds structure to soil and improves drainage, which leads to less erosion.

  • Tips for Use

The U.S. Composting Council provides instructions for compost use for a number of different planting methods.

    • Flowers & Vegetable Gardens - Incorporate 1-2 inches of compost in the top 3-5 inches of soil a few weeks prior to planting. Reapply compost to soil every two years.
    • Turf Maintenance - Aerate lawn thoroughly in spring and/or fall. Top dress with 1/4-inch of compost.
    • Weed Control - Spread a 1-2 inch layer along garden paths and around vegetables for weed control and moisture retention.
    • Mulch - Spread a 1-2 inch layer on perennial beds in the spring to add organic material and micronutrients.
    • With Potting Soil - Blend one part compost with one part sand and one part garden soil.
    • Around Trees & Shrubs - Dig a hole 2/3 the depth of the root ball and at least twice as wide. Mix one part compost with two parts soil from the planting hole. Place the tree or shrub in the planting soil and apply amended soil around the root ball.
  • Processing

Grow Gold Compost® is made from yard waste collected through the Compost It! program in Central Iowa. Yard Waste is ground once it arrives at our facility, and is then turned and maintained for nine to twelve months as it decomposes.

Our finished compost is screened to 1/2 inch or less and is tested for quality by the U.S. Composting Council. No artificial chemical supplements are added to the compost at any point during Metro Waste Authority’s process. • Quality Testing

Through the U.S. Composting Council’s “Seal of Testing Assurance” (STA) program, our product is tested by a third party bi-monthly, except during winter months. The results are posted here*.
